Here is a list of resources used frequently by the WSSP@EBHS. For a more detailed list, click here.
BLAST: a search database used to identify protein or DNA sequences. (It also covers genomic material of other organisms, but we usually don't need to use them). The results are ranked in order of most accurate to least accurate, and BLAST has the ability to detect relationships among sequences which share only isolated regions of similarity. We generally use blastn (for DNA) or blastp (for proteins).
PubMed: from the National Library of Medicine, provides access to millions of citations for many life science journals, dating back to the mid-1960's. It includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources. Useful when researching a sequence identified through BLAST.
Celera Database: similar to BLAST, offers articles and sequences. It's accessible from both home and school; a password and login for EBHS students is available, e-mail Minyoung for more info.
